Just a word of warning, my internet connection dropped out in the freiburg v stuttgart after 29 mins. I frantically restarted the computer and router messed with the wires- still nothing. So I phoned betfair but didn't have my TAN (telephone account number) eventually got through the security questions. and settled my bets - sort of anyway -£15 on 1-2 and -£5 on all other scores, then left it there. came away from the pc and then I remembered that I had insurance on u1.5 and ended up +£2.55.

What I am saying is - what would you do if it happened to you- get prepared for it just in case

might depend on how often your connection goes down and how big your stakes are. A lot of the professional traders have their betfair details to hand and a number to call so they can settle their bets manually and/or a laptop with an internet dongle so they can always close bets

If you have an internet enabled phone you can use it in an emergency (there is a great app for the iphone). If you are really serious you can have more than one internet provider. you can have a dongle as kingnpuk said.
Or if you don't have any of this you could knock on your neighbour's door or pop in to the nearer cafe/bar/pub with internet access...

Touched on this very subject in the Chat Room a couple of days ago.
I have a dongle...£5 per month (Virgin).
I also have (following what was said in the Chat Room), the tel no of Betfair Betting Desk and my TAN (telephone account number) ready to hand.
I have also downloaded the Betfair mobile software to my mobile.

As a punter/trader my punter head says 'WTF mate...never happen...', but my trader head says, 'Imagine if your internet connection failed when you have a REALLY exposed position...'

I have also recently taken to wearing a belt and braces... :)

I had one such moment yesterday. Backed a horse for £100 just before the off. Immediately placed a a closing trade one tick lower and my router dropped it's WAN IP settings. I had no idea if my closing lay had been submitted or not. 20 nervous minutes later I got the thing connected again and, much to my relieve, found that I'd made 60p.

As with any insurance policy, it is up to the customer to decide how much protection they need. Me, I have my TAN written down, but in this case I didn't use it. Having never phoned BF before, the 5f race in question would've been over before I'd rummaged around for it and got through to them.

The way my trading is, and always has been, I've yet to convince myself that the cost of said insurance is worth it. That will change if I ever manage to improve where I'm using stakes of such a size that it would hurt to lose them. But then, if losing them hurts, I shouldn't be using those stakes.

Very important to have a back up guys. Bingo was over last week and we had virgin modem problems. He ended up phoning Betfair to put trades on. I have the Betfair app on Nokia N96 always at the ready in case you need to back or lay quickly. One of our next articles will cover the 'traders set up'.
