Morton play Celtic in the Scottish cup on Saturday. I believe that this game will be such a big game for the Morton players that their minds will not be on tonight's game. Physiologically I think that this will be a big factor.
Personally I feel it's a very dangerous thing for a trader to do, to try and assess players' mind sets before any game. When I used to play amateur/junior football it did not matter to me one jot what future games we had...cup matches or not...I simply played the best I could...as, I believe, did the other players.
However, I recognise that 'outside influences' can have an effect on teams, particularly those events surrounding board level decisions and other management problems...but what 'weighting' would you give to such 'considerations? A one goal penalty? A definite loss? or do you go for a 'player rebellion' where they play their socks off? Who really knows what is happening in the Dressing Room?
I normally ignore any phsycological 'issues' and concentrate on the stats, team sheets etc to develop an opening position to trade around....but to each their own...
As an aside, it's worth noting that sports psychologists do have a very positive effect in raising individual and team performances...indeed Sven used them to influence England during his time as manager.
